Empathy

An artwork I did for an online exhibition that explores kind words and translating them into artworks.

It feels like lately, our world is lacking a great deal of understanding. So much so that it has become a driving factor for violence, hate crime and ignorance. Where empathy arises from sharing similar experiences, understanding something or someone new requires a lot more effort. It needs a conscious act to open our mind and heart. And when we do not try to understand someone, we stop seeing them as unique beings with unique traits and personality, preventing us from seeing them as a whole person and lazily groups them into a stereotype or a label. I hope that we all can stop for a moment and try on another point of view, to see people as they are and not what we think they are, to appreciate each other as a person with dreams, fears and scars. And when we all do so, I am sure we will breathe more easily and be free from the fear that comes with ignorance.
